Earplugs are a widely used type of hearing protection and are therefore part of personal protective equipment. The earplugs are often made of a soft foam material that can be moulded and therefore adapts perfectly to the human ear canal. The special shape prevents pressure in the ear canal and ensures a comfortable fit.
At what noise exposure level must hearing protection be used?
The level of noise exposure above which hearing protection must be worn is regulated by law. For example, the employer must provide hearing protection from a noise exposure of 80 dB(A) in the work area. The use of hearing protection is mandatory from a noise exposure of 85 dB(A). If the person in question already has inner ear damage, the obligation to wear hearing protection applies from 80 dB(A).
Both employers and employees are responsible for fulfilling this obligation. On the one hand, the employer must provide the hearing protection and indicate the obligation to wear it by means of mandatory signs. The employee is responsible for wearing the hearing protection provided.
What are the advantages of earplugs?
The biggest advantage of ear plugs (also known as ear plugs or ear plugs) is their size. Not only do they make them light and comfortable to wear, they are also ideal for transporting. A storage box, for example, is ideal for transporting them and can be stored in a trouser pocket, for example. Thanks to their conical and anatomical shape, the earplugs fit most ear canals and thus ensure optimum insulation and perfect protection.
The properties of earplugs explained
Before purchasing earplugs, you should be aware that there are differences between the individual products - from the material to the shape and usability.
Many of the earplugs available are made of foam, as this not only moulds well to the ear canal, but is also very comfortable to wear. There are also earplugs made from various plastics, which is particularly common with reusable earplugs. Foam materials are generally more difficult to clean, which is why they are usually used for disposable earplugs. For more detailed information on the materials, we recommend that you visit the relevant product page directly!
Earplugs are also very similar in shape. Most earplugs have a conical shape, which adapts well to the ear canal and therefore offers a high level of comfort and reliable sound protection. The foams used are also very flexible, which is why they can be pre-shaped by hand to achieve a customised fit in the ear canal. However, this differs depending on the manufacturer and model. In addition to these mouldable earplugs, there are also pre-moulded earplugs that do not fit the ear canal quite as individually.
How do you find the right earplugs?
Before deciding on earplugs, we recommend asking yourself the following 3 questions:
- Are the earplugs often removed and replaced during use?
- Are there many visitors in your company or do only employees need hearing protection?
- What is the daily noise level at the workplaces concerned?
In addition to the classic individual earplugs, there are also earplugs that are connected with a cord, which can have various advantages. For example, the earplugs are quicker to grip and ready for use. Removal is also somewhat easier and quicker thanks to the cord. In addition, individual earplugs cannot get lost during transport.
As reusable earplugs are also available in addition to disposable earplugs, you should consider which alternative makes more sense in your individual case before buying. If there are large numbers of visitors, you should definitely opt for the disposable version. However, if the hearing protection is provided for the permanent employees of a company, the reusable alternative may also make sense.
When choosing the right hearing protection, however, it is important to pay particular attention to the appropriate attenuation value (in dB):
Single Number Rating (SNR)=attenuation value
The attenuation value (in dB), i.e. the reduction in noise (sound level), is the difference between the volume in front of the ear and behind the hearing protection, i.e. in front of the eardrum.
Example: A processing machine generates a determined noise level of 94 dB. The attenuation value (SNR) of the hearing protection is 34 dB. The machine operator's eardrum still receives 60 dB (94 dB - 34 dB=60 dB). This sound level is generally not hazardous.
The attenuation values are also indicated by the abbreviations
H (High=attenuation value for high frequencies),
M (Medium=attenuation value for medium frequencies) and
L (Low=attenuation value for low frequencies)
labelled.
Effectively prevent hearing loss with earplugs
Whether disposable or reusable earplugs, with or without a cord or supplied in a practical transparent box. You are guaranteed to find the right earplugs for your application in our range. Our earplugs offer attenuation values from 21 dB up to 38 dB, which can be used for a wide variety of noise exposure scenarios.
If you need a larger number of earplugs straight away, we also have practical earplug dispensers in our range!
