Elastic fixation bandages and ideal bandages at WERO
Bandages are bandaging materials and can be used for a wide range of different applications. In first aid, they are mainly used for the secure fixation of compresses or splints.
The classics are non-sterile fixation bandages, which are also known as elastic fixation bandages. Fixation bandages are generally not sterile and should therefore not come into direct contact with the wound or wound surface during wound care. This dressing material is primarily suitable for fixation.

Fixation bandages in use
Other applications include simple support and relief bandages, underlay bandages (i.e. bandage layers over the wound dressing that provide additional padding for the injured area and ensure that moisture is removed) and compression bandages. These are usually ideal bandages with a short stretch. The reusable bandages are also boil-proof or steam-sterilisable.
Bandages are available in different widths, lengths and properties to suit the respective application. Gauze bandages can also be found as basic equipment in every first aid kit. Our various first aid kits, first aid boxes and bags are also fully stocked.
Properties of fixation bandages
A fixation bandage is generally air-permeable, skin-friendly and characterised by a soft feel. The soft materials adapt perfectly to the shape of the body and absorb fluids very well thanks to their absorbency. Depending on the type of weave and fibres used - cotton, polyamide, elastane and viscose are commonly used - the fixation bandage also has varying degrees of elasticity. For injuries to frequently moving or conical (round) parts of the body, such as the knee, an elasticated fixation bandage with high stretch is particularly suitable. There are variants that can be stretched to more than twice the length.
Elastic, cohesive bandages
A cohesive fixation bandage, also known as a self-adhesive fixation bandage, has a special texture that allows the individual strips to adhere to each other even without adhesive. The strips can be easily removed and reapplied by hand, while special warp threads and a microscopically fine plastic surface coating prevent slippage. This makes it easier to apply fixation bandages and improves their stability. Some bandages also contain latex to improve adhesion. However, our self-adhesive (cohesive) fixation bandage, for example, shows that latex-free bandages also adhere excellently without causing allergies.
Such bandages are also ideal for creating functional bandages to fix stressed areas of the body and thus protect against injuries. Modern elastic, cohesive fixation bandages are therefore also used preventively in sports to stabilise stressed body parts and joints - as an alternative to tape bandages or as an underbandage.
Ideal bandage
In the treatment of venous disorders, inelastic or barely elastic bandages in particular are used as compression bandages. Ideal bandages with a short stretch are commonly used. They are usually reusable and should allow repeated washing or sterilisation without loss of elasticity. They can also be used for support and relief bandages. Ideal bandages are therefore also used in first aid and medical treatment of blunt injuries or diseases of muscles, joints and ligaments - such as sprains.
