What is operational first aid?
First aid in the company consists of organisational and care measures for injured persons using simple means and including the emergency call.
Be prepared for an emergency: The includes stocking up on various plasters for minor paper cuts as well as dressing material for larger wounds or severe bleeding. The purchase of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in the company can, under certain circumstances, provide life-saving measures and represent the optimum in company first aid .
Depending on the injury or hazard potential of a workplace, the company must endeavour to take further measures to protect its employees. If, for example, very high temperatures, hot liquids or fire are part of everyday working life, the potential risk of burns should be addressed immediately and appropriate first aid equipment should be available.
First aid - legal regulations and requirements for companies
Only those who are trained in first aid can be first aiders.
Minimum number of first aiders in the company
(§ 26, DGUV regulation 1):
- From 2 up to 20 insured persons present 1 first aider
- For more than 20 insured persons present: in administrative and commercial enterprises 5% of the number of insured persons present. In other companies 10% of the insured persons present
- In day-care centres 1 first aider per group of children
- in universities 10% of the employees.
First aiders at work - when seconds make the difference
In companies, so-called first aiders are trained in accordance with the regulations of the statutory accident insurance institutions for first aid . These are intended to ensure that trained personnel can be deployed at any time and place in the event of an accident. In addition to appropriate instruction and knowledge of first aid, the company first aider should feel personally suited to the job and remain calm in an emergency.
The following tasks must be performed by the first aider:
- Secure the accident site: To prevent further injuries and to protect their own safety.
- Make an emergency call: Activate the rescue chain, filter and communicate relevant information.
- Provide first aid to the casualty and initiate immediate life-saving measures.
- Documentation in the first aid book (link to first aid book)
- Check the first aid materials and, if necessary, equipment: Check the first aid room, check the expiry date of the first aid kit.
