Which symptoms are controlled as part of the cABCDE scheme under Breathing?

The following questions are asked:

  • Is there adequate respiratory activity?
  • Is the oxygen supply sufficient?
  • Is the patient using the auxiliary respiratory muscles?
  • Are injuries to the chest recognisable?
  • Is the ventilation of the lungs equal on both sides?
  • Can abnormal breathing noises such as rales be heard?
  • Are there air pockets under the skin?
  • Are the neck veins congested?

What measures are taken to secure the breathing and chest?

Breathing should be checked again after each measure carried out: By counting the respiratory rate, attention is paid to irregular breathing or lack of breathing. If breathing has stopped, cardiopulmonary resuscitation must be performed.

If a lung injury is recognisable, immediate treatment of the injury must be initiated. The abdomen is also palpated in this step. If the abdomen is very hard, there may be injuries to internal organs.

A decompression puncture needle is used to remove air, blood or fluid from the chest in order to reduce the pressure in the chest and relieve pressure on the thorax.
