Using mosquito repellent correctly
In principle, there is not much you can do wrong when applying mosquito repellent. The most important thing is to apply it evenly and without gaps. It is also important to note the duration of action of the insect repellent used - this can vary depending on the climate. The protective effect may be shorter in the event of heavy sweating or high humidity. To prolong protection, the mosquito spray should then be reapplied. When applying to the face, the product should first be sprayed onto the hand and then distributed to prevent the mosquito spray from getting into the eyes or mouth. The spray can be used both on the skin and on clothing. However, it is essential to check the material compatibility before applying to clothing!
Treat mosquito bites: What really helps?
Unfortunately, mosquito bites cannot always be prevented. Sometimes you forget to apply the mosquito repellent spray completely, other times you fail to extend the duration of its effect by reapplying it.
After the bite comes the unpleasant side effect: itching. The first reflex is often to start scratching - although this is the biggest mistake you can make. It only relieves the itching for a very short time, after which the opposite effect occurs: Scratching intensifies the itching. In addition, scratching can cause small skin injuries, which in the worst case can become infected. This can turn a sting into a permanent scar.
Bite healer: Treat mosquito bites with heat
To prevent or at least alleviate itching, it is advisable to treat the bites with a bite healer, for example. This warms the area affected by the bite and reduces swelling and itching. The concentrated heat breaks down the protein molecules responsible for the itching. Compared to creams, the sting healer works completely without chemicals. This makes it ideal for pregnant women, allergy sufferers and children. The "bite away" sting healer comes with two different programmes:
- Programme for adults: The application time is around 5 seconds
- Programme for children: The application time is around 3 seconds
Mosquito plasters: slightly lifts the skin layer
Mosquito plasters are a good alternative to bite healers. These can be applied to the affected area in the event of a mosquito bite. The plaster not only stops the itching, but also reduces the swelling around the bite - without the use of any chemical agents. Instead, the effect of the plasters is achieved purely mechanically by slightly lifting the top layer of skin.
Spray gel: mineral salt solution absorbs the injected secretions
The third option is to treat the bite with the "BiteEx" spray gel. This alternative also completely dispenses with chemical substances or other additives, such as alcohol and fragrances. This also makes it ideal for allergy sufferers and children. It effectively relieves itching and swelling and also promotes wound healing. The gel is based on a mineral salt solution. After application, the gel absorbs the secretions injected by the sting and minimises the typical symptoms such as itching, burning and redness.
What causes itching after a mosquito bite?
Everyone has experienced the annoying itching caused by a mosquito bite. But what causes the itching in the first place? Strictly speaking, it is caused by an allergic reaction. When mosquitoes bite, they inject a saliva secretion consisting of protein molecules and peptides. This is intended to prevent the blood from clotting when it is sucked. The skin reacts to this secretion by releasing histamines, which ultimately causes the allergic reaction and the associated itching.
How do you remove a tick correctly?
A particularly dreaded insect and difficult to get rid of without the right tools: The tick! The sneaky thing about ticks is the way they bite. Unlike other insects, they do not disappear after their bite, but anchor themselves in the skin using barbs. Since ticks can sometimes transmit dangerous pathogens, they should be removed as quickly as possible. In principle, this can also be done with your fingers, but there is a risk that parts of the tick will remain in the skin. The easiest and safest way to remove ticks is with tick tweezers or a tick card. The tick should always be pulled vertically out of the skin. Important: Once the tick has been removed, the affected area of skin should be observed regularly. If there is still redness even days after the bite, a doctor should definitely be consulted!
