What is a chest seal?
A chest seal is a special plaster to prevent pneumothorax in open chest injuries. In a pneumothorax, air collects between the lungs and the chest. As a result, one or both lungs are severely restricted in breathing. This can lead to a collapsed lung and acute danger to life.
How does a chest seal prevent a pneumothorax?
A chest seal is placed where air can enter the pleural cavity, e.g. over an open wound or a hernia in the chest wall. The chest seal is a type of adhesive film that is stuck to the skin and forms a barrier against the penetration of air. The use of a chest seal prevents further air from entering the pleural cavity, which could aggravate the pneumothorax.
Where is a chest seal used?
In most cases, the chest seal is used pre-hospital by the first aider to stabilise a patient's condition until they can be taken to hospital. However, it is important to note that a chest seal alone is not sufficient to treat a pneumothorax. Appropriate medical care is required to fully treat the pneumothorax and prevent complications.
