If a person is no longer breathing sufficiently or even independently, rapid ventilation can be life-saving. Respiratory masks are an extremely important tool for emergency services and doctors.
But it is not only medical professionals who can use them. In emergency situations, respiratory masks can also be a crucial tool for first responders in the home or at work.
Respiratory masks support resuscitation measures in the event of respiratory arrest, serve to support the supply of oxygen, interrupt dangerous hyperventilation and serve to protect first responders from infection. They should therefore be part of every emergency kit.
Ventilation is often the difference between life and death
The importance of ventilation in emergency situations is often underestimated. Every year in Germany, around 60,000 people suffer a cardiovascular arrest outside hospital and stop breathing. Only 11% of these people survive.
Statistically, an ambulance arrives at the scene of an emergency around seven minutes after the alarm is raised. However, respiratory arrest leaves irreparable brain damage after just five minutes. And every second increases the likelihood that resuscitation will no longer be successful.
Cardiac massage and mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose resuscitation can increase the chance of survival by up to three times. However, the inhibition threshold is often high. In addition to the fear of doing something wrong, there is usually a fear of direct physical contact.
If a respiratory mask is to hand, it makes it easier for first aiders to provide safe and hygienic ventilation and lowers inhibitions about contact. Equipped with a filter, masks prevent contact with blood, vomit or saliva and ensure protection against infection for helpers and victims.
Masks for ventilation: types and areas of application
Respiratory masks are intended as a short-term ventilation aid. In emergency situations, they are used to bridge the time until breathing can be restored independently or intubation can be performed.
During ventilation, the mask is the connecting piece to the patient's mouth and nose. It can be connected to a ventilator, used with a ventilation bag or serve as a hygienic intermediate piece for mouth-to-mouth or mouth-to-nose ventilation. Accordingly, masks for ventilation are available in various designs and sizes for adults, children and newborns.
Ventilation aids in cloth format or in a handy folding case are easy to use in an emergency, compact and therefore easy to carry. They are primarily used for direct person-to-person ventilation and are designed for hygienic resuscitation by non-professionals. Resuscitation wipes are also available as a particularly handy key ring version, which is always ready to hand in an emergency.
Resuscitation masks that are combined with a resuscitation bag or an oxygen supply are generally reserved for professional use by appropriately trained rescuers.
Oxygen masks or inhalation masks are used to provide additional oxygen in the event of breathing problems. Such oxygen masks are not primarily intended for ventilation in the event of respiratory arrest.
Hyperventilation masks are another aid. Hyperventilation is uncontrolled, accelerated breathing that can be triggered by panic, for example. Hyperventilation masks have a closed bag, which allows the exhaled air to be inhaled again. Rebreathing helps to bring hyperventilation back under control.
Features of respiratory masks
Masks for ventilation are shaped so that they adapt to the anatomy of the face. This ensures a good and secure fit. Head straps can provide additional comfort and a good fit.
the masks are usually made of transparent plastic so that the person being ventilated has a clear view of their mouth and nose. This makes it possible to see, for example, whether the person is vomiting or showing signs of breathing again.
Masks for use in emergency situations are designed for single use and must not be reused. They are sterile-packed and ready for use quickly. They also contain easy-to-understand and clear brief instructions for resuscitation.
First aid in an emergency: using respiratory masks correctly
If a person is unconscious and not breathing or is breathing rapidly, the cause is probably cardiac arrest. Once an emergency call has been made, rapid resuscitation is vital. Cardiac massage is initially more important than rescue breathing. This involves pressing on the chest with the hand about five centimetres deep about 100 times per minute. Ideally, breathing should also be given with the aid of an emergency respiratory mask. The use of emergency masks is deliberately kept simple so that laypersons can use them easily:
- The affected person is placed in a supine position and the head is slightly extended backwards.
- The person's mouth is opened and the respiratory mask is pressed lightly onto the face so that it fits snugly against the skin.
- Air is blown evenly through the mask. The chest should visibly rise.
- Cardiopulmonary resuscitation is performed by alternating between two ventilations and 30 chest compressions.
In this way, circulation and oxygen supply can be maintained temporarily until the emergency services arrive.
Appropriate first aid equipment saves lives
First aid saves lives! Good equipment can be the decisive factor, especially when it comes to a hygienically sensitive area such as ventilation.
An emergency respiratory mask on a key fob is quickly to hand and ready for use. Compact masks in a folding case or complete resuscitation sets are a valuable addition to any first aid kit, whether in the car, at home or at work.
