What is an instant cold compress and how does it work?
An instant cold compress is a practical aid for the initial treatment of swelling and injuries. Due to its compact format and easy handling, it is an ideal companion when travelling and can be used in advance without cooling. Since November 2009, the cold compress has been part of the DIN contents of first aid kits in accordance with DIN 13157 and DIN 13169 and has an analgesic, anti-inflammatory and decongestant effect.
When is a cold compress used?
An instant cold compress can be used for numerous injuries:
- For sports injuries (bruises or strains)
- For insect bites
- For haematomas
- For broken bones
- For minor burns and sprains
- For amputations
- For toothache
How do I activate an instant cold compress?
- Squeeze the centre of the bag.
- Then shake the bag a few times to speed up the chemical reaction.
- The instant cold compress is ready for use within a few seconds and can be applied to the affected area.
What should I bear in mind when applying a cold compress?
- Do not place the cold compress on bare skin, but place it in a disposable non-woven cover.
- Cold compresses should not be worn on the skin for longer than 25-30 minutes
- Only use the cold compress once
- Only use cold compresses on children with caution, as this can lead to superficial frostbite on the skin
- Dispose of the compress bag in the household waste afterwards
In which situations should cold compresses not be used?
Cold compresses can provide quick and uncomplicated pain relief for a wide range of injuries. However, they are not suitable for every injury:
- For open wounds
- For certain muscle or joint injuries
