A first-aid room is used for the initial treatment of injuries and acute illnesses. It is particularly essential in larger companies or in areas with an increased risk of accidents in order to be able to provide immediate assistance and initiate further medical measures if necessary.

As a rule, a first-aid room is mandatory from 1,000 employees, in certain industries with a particular risk potential from a smaller number of employees. Irrespective of the legal obligation, a first-aid room is an important investment in occupational health and safety. It demonstrates the company's commitment to the well-being of its employees and can help to reduce the risk of work absences due to accidents and illness. The benefits of such a room therefore go far beyond the legal requirements.
The following companies must have a first aid room or a comparable facility (Section 25 (4) DGUV Regulation 1), irrespective of the industry, the type of activity and the incidence of accidents in the company:
These requirements ensure that a suitable first aid facility is always available in larger and particularly high-risk companies.
The equipment in a first-aid room must be able to cover a wide range of emergency scenarios. In addition to the basic equipment with bandages, disinfectants, disposable gloves and rescue blankets, this also includes a treatment couch and a hand basin for hygiene.
Depending on the size of the business and specific sources of danger, the basic equipment can be supplemented with other important elements such as defibrillators, eye showers or specific emergency medication. This equipment must be regularly checked and supplemented to ensure that it is always ready for use.
Since January 2011, the basis for equipping first-aid rooms has been ASR A4.3. The new technical rules for workplaces have revised the requirements for first-aid equipment in companies and clearly formulated the employer's legal obligations. ASR A4.3 applies to all companies, administrations and educational establishments.
ASR A4.3 specifies the requirements for first aid equipment and facilities as well as first aid rooms in companies. Among other things, it specifies the contents of first aid kits, the required number and their provision. The new ASR A4.3 also provides clear recommendations for the equipment of first aid rooms and the provision of medical equipment, such as defibrillators.
The Workplace Ordinance sets out structural requirements for safety rooms in companies and on construction sites. The most important points are summarised below:
If there are more than 50 employees - including subcontractors - a first aid room or container must be available in accordance with the first aid room directive. The container must be set up in such a way that it can be easily reached by the emergency services and the transport of injured persons is guaranteed. In this case, the requirements for first aid rooms also apply - the container must have a floor area of at least 12.5 m². The equipment of first-aid rooms on construction sites depends on the risk assessment and the required first-aid measures.
