A full face mask, also known as a full face respirator, is a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) that protects both the wearer's respiratory tract and eyes. It is specially designed to protect the wearer from hazardous gases, particles, vapours, dusts, aerosols and smoke. Full-face masks are primarily used in environments where the breathing air needs to be cleaned of harmful substances and where there is also a risk to the eyes, e.g. from corrosive substances.

A high-quality full face mask, such as the BLS 5700 full face mask, has several important features:

Full face masks differ from half masks in that they also protect the eye area. While half masks only cover the mouth and nose to protect the respiratory tract, full face masks offer comprehensive protection for the entire face. This makes them particularly suitable for environments in which the eyes are at risk from splashes or harmful vapours.

Full-face masks should always be used when the breathing air needs to be cleaned of particles, gases or vapours. If there is also a significant risk to the eyes, e.g. from corrosive substances, the use of a full face mask is essential. A full-face mask is made of rubber or silicone and therefore also offers ideal protection against splashes of hazardous liquids.

Filters are divided into different classes - depending on their capacity (gas filters) or efficiency (particle filters). The filter class determines whether the respective filter can also be worn at higher concentrations or for longer periods of time.

The durability of a full face mask filter depends on its filter class and the external environmental factors. These include:

• Pollutant concentration in the ambient air
• Composition of pollutants
• Air humidity
• Temperature
• Air consumption of the user

Due to the numerous factors and the different influences on the possible service life of a full-face mask, it is not possible to give a generalised service life. Local or company-internal occupational health and safety regulations must be observed.

You can recognise that a filter needs to be changed, for example

• A noticeable taste/odour with gas filters
• A noticeable increase in breathing resistance with particle filters
• Both characteristics can occur with combination filters

Goggle frames are usually too large for protective masks and can impair a reliable seal. Mask goggle inserts can be used for this purpose, but they must fit exactly with the full face mask. The lens material is not specified, but should be resistant to cleaning agents and disinfectants.

After use, masks must be completely cleaned and disinfected. This includes:

• Dismantling the mask: All parts must be separated.
• Cleaning the mask body: Rinse with a mild detergent and lukewarm water.
• Disinfection: Can also be done by machine.

Cleaning and maintenance should be carried out by a qualified person to ensure that the mask can continue to be used effectively and safely.
