Treating life-threatening haemorrhages
Life-threatening haemorrhages are prioritised in the cABCDE scheme under the abbreviation for "critical bleeding" - more recently also frequently with "x" for exsanguination (bleeding out). Untreated critical bleeding is one of the most common causes of death, especially in the military environment. Every minute counts, which is why fast and targeted first aid and reliable emergency equipment are essential. You can conveniently buy the necessary products from a reliable source in the WERO online shop: tourniquets, haemostatic agents and wound packs.

What is critical haemorrhage?
Critical or circulatory haemorrhages include severe bleeding in the extremities, trunk and head haemorrhages as well as bleeding from pelvic fractures. Critical haemorrhage is associated with major blood loss. In adults, the loss of approx. 1 litre of blood is life-threatening. In children, life-threatening haemorrhage occurs with a significantly smaller amount of blood.
How can bleeding from the extremities be stopped?
- Treat the injured person in a lying position and elevate the affected part of the body.
- Apply compression to the wound using a pressure bandage to stop the bleeding.
- if the critical bleeding continues, tamponade the wound using wound packing, if necessary with haemostatic agents.
- If the bleeding still cannot be stopped, a tourniquet should be applied.
