What are haemostatic agents?
Haemostatic agents, often referred to as haemostatic agents, are products designed to effectively and rapidly stop severe bleeding. They are of critical importance in situations where standard haemostatic procedures, such as pressure dressings or elevation of the affected limb, are inadequate or inapplicable. Such scenarios can occur in wartime situations, major accidents, on construction sites, in industrial environments or during surgical procedures.
What should be done in the event of severe bleeding?
The following chronological order has been established:
- Stop the bleeding with manual compression.
- Apply a pressure bandage.
- If the bleeding does not stop: Apply a tourniquet.
- If application of a tourniquet is not possible or is unsuccessful: Use haemostatic agents.
When can haemostatic agents be used?
As a general rule, haemostatic agents should only be used for heavily bleeding wounds if haemostasis is not possible by other means. There may be the following reasons for this:
- Anatomical reasons (e.g. heavily bleeding wounds on the neck)
- Ineffectiveness of pressure dressing orTourniquet
The method of application of haemostatic agents depends largely on the type of product. After the wound has been cleaned if possible, the haemostatic agent is applied directly to the source of bleeding. This can be done by sprinkling on a powder, applying an impregnated compress or inserting a special sponge. Pressure is then usually applied to the wound to support the haemostatic effect and control the bleeding. The exact application may vary depending on the product, which is why it is essential to study the instructions for use carefully.
How long can haemostatic agents be used?
The length of time a haemostatic can be used varies and depends on both the nature of the injury and the specification of the product. Some haemostatic agents are designed for temporary use to bridge the time until professional medical treatment is available. Others can be left on the wound for longer, depending on the manufacturer's instructions. It is of utmost importance to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure proper application and avoid complications.
What types of haemostatic agents are there?
There are various forms of haemostatic agents that are designed for different requirements and areas of application. Granules and powders are particularly suitable for small, heavily bleeding wounds as they are easy to spread and act quickly. Compresses, pads and sponges, on the other hand, are suitable for larger wounds or those that require a specific shape. Wound dressings impregnated with haemostatic substances are easy to use and are therefore particularly popular in first aid.
The different active ingredients in haemostatic agents
Haemostatic agents contain various active ingredients that accelerate the clotting of the blood and thus ensure rapid haemostasis. For example, kaolin or zeolite.
One outstanding active ingredient is chitosan, a biological active ingredient obtained from the chitin of crustacean shells - which is why it is 100 % biodegradable. Chitosan has the ability to quickly bind large quantities of red blood cells and thus promote blood clotting - independently of the body's own blood clotting factors. It has antibacterial properties that minimise the risk of infection and thus support wound healing. It is also suitable for allergy sufferers as it does not trigger any allergic reactions. If the injured person is hospitalised, it can be easily removed for further treatment. Chitosan is available as gauze or granules.
Haemostatic agents in the emergency services
Haemostyptics are indispensable in the emergency medical services. They enable rescue personnel to act quickly and control life-threatening bleeding, even under difficult conditions and in the case of critical injuries. Haemostatic agents therefore help to significantly increase patients' chances of survival.
In our range you will find a carefully selected selection of haemostatic agents that have been chosen for their quality and effectiveness. They are an essential part of a professional emergency kit and also provide valuable services in a company first aid kit or at home.
