Help against mosquitoes
Summertime is mosquito time - What helps against mosquitoes and how can you protect yourself sensibly?
Summer is already in full swing. We spend as much time as possible in the fresh air alongside work and try to top up our vitamin D levels. We are in a better mood, more relaxed and enjoy the end of the working day. But unfortunately, the joy is often disturbed by uninvited guests. It usually starts as early as dusk - there is a high-pitched buzzing in the air. Mosquitoes, the dark side of summer?
Contrary to popular belief, mosquitoes are actually around all year round. There are also both diurnal and nocturnal mosquitoes. Protection against the annoying mosquitoes is therefore recommended throughout the day.
But what helps prevent mosquitoes? And if I do get bitten - what is effective against the itching?
Myths about mosquitoes
To understand how we can best protect ourselves against mosquito bites, we first need to dispel a few myths.
Light attracts mosquitoes: This may be true for many flying insects - mosquitoes, or biting midges, on the other hand, are primarily attracted by odours. So it doesn't matter whether you are in the dark, by candlelight or under floodlights - mosquitoes find us by smell.
People with "sweet blood" are bitten more often: Sweet blood does not actually exist in this form. However, it is true that blood and our genetic make-up play an important role in principle. This is because genes influence the odour or composition of a person's smell.
Clothing plays no role: It is correct that clothing has no direct influence on the aggressiveness of mosquitoes. However, longer clothing reduces the attack surface and therefore the chance of being bitten. On light-coloured clothing, the pests stand out more quickly and a firmer fabric prevents them from biting through.
Essential oils keep mosquitoes away: People often try to keep mosquitoes away with lemon or lavender oil. The essential oils are supposed to mask the body odour and thus keep the mosquitoes away or at least distract them from your own body. However, essential oils only have a short-term effect and therefore do not provide effective protection against mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes are usually only found in lakes and ponds: It is true that mosquitoes breed in lakes and ponds. However, mosquitoes also have significantly more natural enemies around such bodies of water. In gardens, green spaces, swimming pools or forests, however, the mosquito's natural enemies are much rarer. Even small damp and wet areas are enough to create a new habitat for mosquitoes.
Ultrasonic devices - the all-purpose weapon: Ultrasonic devices are heavily advertised, especially at the start of the summer season - but their effectiveness has not been proven. Furthermore, they are not suitable for use outdoors
What is effective against mosquitoes?
But what really helps against mosquitoes? Fortunately, you don't have to expose yourself helplessly to mosquitoes. Repellents, i.e. sprays that are usually perceived by an organism through its sense of smell, have proven to be an effective mosquito repellent in recent years.
The insect repellent spray Aktivin® BiesterStop Plus provides immediate and reliable protection against mosquitoes for up to 8 hours and against ticks for up to 4 hours and has a pleasant fresh scent. This means that you are protected against mosquitoes for the entire working day with a single application and can get through the day without itchy bites. The insect repellent spray Aktivin® BiesterStop Plus is very kind to the skin and is therefore also suitable for children aged 3 and over.
Application is child's play: Spray the areas to be protected completely and evenly with Aktivin® BiesterStop Plus insect repellent. When applying to the face, first spray the product onto the hand and then spread carefully
How do you treat mosquito bites if you do get bitten?
Very important: Do not scratch. Even if it is often the first impulse - it makes the itching worse. Saliva can alleviate the itching for a short time. However, the most effective way to treat mosquito bites is with a thermal bite healer.
Thermal bite healers, such as the Cobra bite away model, work without chemicals and are therefore also suitable for children. The localised application of heat prevents swelling and itching of mosquito bites. The golden rule is: the earlier the bite healer is applied, the less itching there will be.
The way the sting healer works is as ingenious as it is simple. The concentrated heat (approx. 49-53 °C) at the puncture site leads to the partial decomposition of the protein molecules introduced and to the suppression of the release of the body's own histamine. This leads to a reduction in swelling and itching.
BiteEx spray gel - the alternative to a thermal sting healer
The BiteEx spray gel relieves discomfort such as itching and swelling immediately after application. It also inhibits inflammation and promotes rapid wound healing. The effect of BiteEx is based on an electrochemically activated mineral salt solution. Applied to the skin as a gel film, the mineral salts (silicates) contained in BiteEx practically absorb the secretion injected by insects during a bite.
As BiteEx does not contain any irritating ingredients, it can be applied several times a day. It has been dermatologically tested and is very well tolerated. Children and allergy sufferers can also use the spray gel without hesitation. Over time, the spray gel simply breaks down into water and salts.
