Environment Day

5 June was declared "Environment Day" by the United Nations in 1972 and four years later by the Federal Republic of Germany. On this day, ecological commitment is to be promoted globally through various events, campaigns and measures. In particular, the day is intended to raise awareness of the fact that it is above all people themselves who threaten the diversity and stability of the environment. Sustainability at WERO: What we are already doing Sustainability in practice at WERO is multifaceted and encompasses the areas of social and economic sustainability in addition to climate and the environment.

  • EcoVadis certification
  • Founding member of the corporate climate protection network
  • Use of renewable energies such as solar power and solar thermal energy: solar modules generate 121,000 kWh per year, enough to supply 35 private households.
  • Installation of macrolon double-skin sheets on all light wells to prevent heat gain
  • Window foiling
  • Modernisation of the lighting system in the order picking area to improve working conditions while simultaneously reducing electricity consumption

  • Installation of a combined heat and power unit, saving: approx. 70,000 kWh of external electricity
  • Intelligent radiator control
  • Insulation of the heating pipes
  • Heating energy consumption to be reduced to a maximum of 65 kWh/sqm by 2023
  • Heat pump optimisation
  • Green-certified electricity
  • Green-certified gas
  • Reducing fleet consumption by gradually switching to more fuel-efficient vehicles: focus on e-mobility. All vehicles to be converted by 2025

Sustainability at WERO: What we have planned - Outlook

The installation of new PV modules on the meadows in front of the logistics building is also being planned.

Discussions are underway regarding the installation of a wind turbine on the WERO site to generate electricity. The exact framework conditions for the realisation of such a project are currently being examined.

In future, the printed WERO product catalogues will be replaced by an annual WERO magazine (print and digital). This will save 24,000,000 sheets of paper, the equivalent of around 200 trees.
