What are dressings?
A compress is generally a wound dressing. They are often essential for the initial treatment of wounds. Compresses made of gauze or non-woven fabric are generally used for this application. They are used to cover wounds and protect them from germs. They are also used for wound cleansing and haemostasis.
When it comes to covering a wound quickly and easily, a gauze dressing is often the first choice. They are made of absorbent cotton fabric. The advantage of non-woven compresses is that they are less likely to stick to wounds and wound edges.
In addition to the "standard" compresses, cold and warm compresses with gel filling are also very important, the primary purpose of which is to cool or warm a specific area of the body and thus effectively relieve pain.
When are cold/warm compresses used?
Compresses not only play an important role in the initial treatment of wounds. Cold and warm compresses are also particularly suitable for treating sprains, bruising, swelling, muscle strains or toothache. Depending on the application, they can either be heated or cooled before use.
How do cold or heat compresses work?
Reusable cold/warm compresses can be used to achieve both a cooling and a warming effect. They contain a special gel filling that stores heat and cold. Cooling is achieved using a freezer compartment, for example. The compress should be stored there permanently so that it is ready for immediate use. For a warm application, it is sufficient to place it in hot water at around 80 °C for 5 to 10 minutes. The microwave is also suitable for warming.
Another alternative for quick cooling are instant cold compresses. They have the advantage that they do not need to be cooled beforehand. This makes them ideal for everyday strains, bruises or other blunt injuries - but they can also be used to treat insect bites or minor burns. They are also often the first choice for sports injuries. This is because the cooling effect develops just a few seconds after the compress is activated. The duration is around 30 minutes. Compared to gel compresses, however, instant cold compresses cannot be reused and are therefore only suitable for single use.
When is it useful to use cold compresses to relieve pain?
Cold compresses help to relieve acute pain. This is because the cold reduces the conduction speed of the nerves. However, the activity of the pain receptors can also be reduced by the cold stimulus, which leads to immediate pain relief. At the point where the cold compress touches the body, the blood vessels constrict, which reduces blood flow.
Heat therapy can also help to alleviate various types of pain. It is particularly beneficial for back pain or tension in the neck area, for example.
