What is a cervical support?
A cervical support is a plastic sleeve for immobilising and relieving the cervical spine. It is also often referred to as a cervical collar or neck brace.
When is a cervical support used?
The cervical support is used for people who have suffered a whiplash injury, who complain of pain in the cervical spine or who are suspected of having a slipped disc. The cervical support relieves pressure on the cervical spine and restricts the patient's ability to move their head, neck and back. This is intended to prevent further damage and long-term consequences to the spine.
What types of cervical supports are there?
Cervical supports are available in a wide variety of versions and depend on the age and size of the person being treated, the duration of wear and the severity of the injury. Consequently, there are more flexible and less flexible models that enable partial to complete immobilisation of the cervical spine, often referred to as soft, semi-rigid and rigid versions of the cervical support:
- The soft cervical support, often also called a foam collar, is used less for immobilisation than for support, which is why it is often used for injuries that can be cured by wearing a cervical support for several days.
- The semi-rigid cervical support is used to partially relieve pressure on the head and increasingly restricts the range of movement.
- The rigid cervical support provides the best possible immobilisation of the cervical spine and is usually used during initial treatment or during transport from the accident site to hospital.
Models that can be reduced to a small pack size by folding and rolling, are adjustable using Velcro and are radiolucent are particularly practical.
How long should cervical supports be worn?
Depending on the severity of the injury, a cervical support should be worn for as short a time as possible, as otherwise the muscles may regress. Wearing the brace for longer than absolutely necessary can delay the healing process.
